ESTABLISHMENT:

The Wayne County Employees’ Retirement Sytem was created under the authority of Act. No. 156 of the Public Acts of 1851, as amended, by Act 249 of the Public Acts of 1943. The Board of Supervisors adopted an ordinance on August 8, 1944, establing the Wayne County Employees’ Retirement System to become effective on December 01, 1944.
Since it’s inception the Wayne County Employees’ Retirement System has provided retirement and related benefits for thousands of Wayne County public employees Today the System serves nearly 10,000 active and retired members.

 

First Board

The original Board of Trustees was comprised of three (3) ex-officio members: William A. Comstock, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors; Jacob P. Sumeracki, Chairman of the Board of Auditors and John J. Kozaren, Wayne County Treasurer, and four (4) elected employee members: John C. Jacoby, Dr. T.K. Gruber, Louis G. Basso and Jacob C. Robinson.

 

 

BENEFITS PAID TO DATE:

From December 01, 1944, through December 31, 2003 the Retirement System has paid over Two Billion dollars to retirees and beneficiaries.

 

EXCUTIVE SECRETARIES:

The Retirement System has had only four (4) executive secretaries over the past 60 years

FIRST RETIREE:

Alice B. Keenan, Wayne County General Hospital, retired with 51 ½ years of service, effective December 01, 1944.
